LAST CHANCE FOR YOUR PROPERTY TO OFFER A WALK DURING THE LAST GREEN VALLEY’S WALKING WEEKENDS 2007
June 18 is the deadline for walk proposals for the 17th Annual Walking WeekendS, October 5-8 and 12-14. Walks will be chosen based on originality, popularity, and promotion of the goals of The Last Green Valley. Those who know a great deal about local history, culture or the natural environment are invited to submit a walk in conjunction with a town, school or recognized civic, cultural, or environmental organization; landowners may also suggest walks on their own property.
Walks can be leisurely strolls or vigorous hikes. They can be held at a working farm, a town green, a nature preserve, an old burying ground, or at any other interesting site, and can vary in length from half an hour to several hours. Walks can be specially designed for young children, for particular interest or ability groups, for those with pets, or for the general public. All walks must be free, guided, fun, informative, non-smoking, and conducted primarily outdoors and must take place in one of the 35 towns in The Last Green Valley. Walk leaders should plan to attend a training session and must agree to comply with the rules and procedures governing the event.
Walking WeekendS, sponsored by The Last Green Valley with the generous support of The Savings Institute Bank & Trust and other area contributors, is a great opportunity for an organization to highlight a recent project, for a town to revive local identity or celebrate a historical milestone, for public agencies to promote health and fitness, for civic groups to expand public interest and understanding, for farmers and foresters to expand awareness of critical issues, and for schools to educate the future stewards of The Last Green Valley.
